Karen Xie, Ph.D., is Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President at Blue Shield of California, a $20B annual revenue company servicing more than 4M members in the state’s commercial, individual and government markets. Karen directs and develops overall technology strategy and execution to enable transformation into the digital age. She also leads Health Innovation Technology, driving technology-enabled innovation to enable business growth and healthcare ecosystem transformation. Karen has over 20 years of IT experience in the healthcare industry. Prior to joining Blue Shield in 2014, she served as Vice President of Enterprise Architecture and Innovation at Trinity Health, a Michigan-based national health system. Karen currently serves on the Advisory Board of University of California/Riverside in the Design Thinking Executive Program, and is a member of the Cross-Functional Executive Talent Council at Blue Shield. She has received numerous awards, including the “Bay Area’s Most Influential Women award by The San Francisco Business Times.†Karen holds a Ph.D. in Physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, having launched her career over the course of several years as a research scientist in quantum machines at Columbia University. A graduate of the Stanford University’s Executive Program in Leadership, she has published over 25 novel scientific research papers in internationally renowned journals and magazines.
